Interior Moodboard's and Colour Palettes

Before getting fully immersed in decision making mode, I feel it is super important to have a fair idea on your planned colour palette and ‘overall look & feel’ with materials and textures as a very first step. Having this set from the beginning enables you to continue making decisions along the way that will give you a consistency and all areas marrying together seamlessly.

Some of our decisions that were made very early on relied on me knowing what our finished colours or looks would be, so as a first step I worked on defining a colour palette and some moodboard’s that would be referred to with all design decisions.

Here’s how I planned our colour palette and overall look and feel. You may learn something for your own build and design planning.

INSPIRATION

I head down to the Island Bay beach with my camera and got a bit snappy taking photos of the beautiful cliffs and scenery down there. Island Bay has the most amazing layer upon layer clay cliffs. The colour and texture that I captured quickly became the source of inspiration not only for colour scheme, but also for the materials we plan to use in the build.

This scenery offers the most beautiful and organic colour palette. Taking one of the close up shots of the cliffs I started to pull some key colours out, ensuring that we have some neutral and sandy whites for the main walls, along with accent colours that can be applied to feature walls and furnishings.

I then flicked through my trusty Dulux Colour Fan and selected some potential colours that could be used for Interior Walls and feature items.

We also loved the range of texture in those cliffs. It got us thinking and investigating using rocks or stone as part of the house design in both exterior and interior.

We have also been inspired to apply a range of texture throughout the house, potentially with plastered walls, textured panels or timber lined walls.

MOODBOARDS

After a bit of research and defining the main source of inspiration and colour palettes, I created a few moodboards that then came with me everywhere I went. And with every decision I made, I always referred back to these key moodboards to make sure that all products and materials would marry in with our planned schemes.

INTERIOR TEXTURE MOODBOARD

Texture being a pretty important design element, I gathered together looks that offered a variety of textures and also married in with our chosen colour palette
